NWSL Power Rankings: As the international summer break nears, the Kansas City Current continue electric ways, winning their sixth straight

The NWSL goes on a brief summer break until the beginning of August, and the last weekend of games was packed with excitement. The Kansas City Current continue to roll, earning their sixth straight win of the season.

Racing Louisville shocked the Orlando Pride, handing the reigning NWSL champs just their fourth loss of the season. Angel City continues to search for an answer after going winless in five straight, as do Utah and Chicago, who have long winning droughts.

The Golden Boot race is heating up, as Gotham FC's Esther Gonzalez sits at the top with 10 goals. Right behind her is Temwa Chawinga and Barbra Banda, with eight goals each.

    Prior Ranking: 14

    Result: Lost to Seattle Reign FC 4-1

    Ramifications: It was another tough weekend for Utah, as the Royals lost for the 10th time this season. They are at the bottom of the league standings, but had moments of hope through the midfield thanks to Ally Sentnor. Bianca St-George scored Utah's lone goal - just their 11th goal of the season.

    13Chicago Stars

    Prior Ranking: 13

    Result: Lost to Portland Thorns 1-0

    Ramifications: The Stars put up an even fight against Portland, despite falling on the road. The game was split possession wise, with the Thorns' Pietra Tordin breaking through for the only goal. The Stars have a lot of work to do to get back into the conversation in the league standings, with a 1-9-3 record.

    Prior Ranking: 12

    Result: Lost to North Carolina Courage 2-1

    Ramifications: Once again, the Dash had some bright spots by way of Yazmeen Ryan on the flank and Avery Patterson showing off her goal-scoring ability. Despite falling to the Courage, the Dash played a close 90-minutes and continue to improve each week.

    Prior Ranking: 11

    Result: Lost to Gotham FC 2-1

    Ramifications: Bay FC, currently in 10th place in the league standings, put up a good match against Gotham, despite failing to find answers for Esther Gonzalez's finishing ability. Bay FC got on the board first, thanks to Penelope Hocking's goal in the 11th minute.

    10Angel City

    Prior Ranking: 9

    Result: Lost to Kansas City Current 1-0

    Ramifications: It's been a tough few games for Angel City, who dropped another game, their sixth of the season, against a very talented Kansas City Current team. Although Angel City dropped three points at CPKC Stadium, the Los Angeles team dominated the match's possession - and goalkeeper Angelina Anderson had six saves to the Current's two.

    9Seattle Reign

    Prior Ranking: 8

    Result: Beat Utah Royals 4-1

    Ramifications: Seattle are now a scoring team, in case you didn't know. Once they signed Lynn Biyendolo they started on a scoring rampage. On Saturday, Ji So-Yun, Maddie Dahlien both scored, and Emeri Adames chipped in a brace. The Reign are now in sixth place with a record of 6-4-3.

    8North Carolina Courage

    Prior Ranking: 7

    Result: Beat Houston Dash 2-1

    Ramifications: Jaedyn Shaw has finally got on the scoreboard. The new North Carolina Courage forward earned her first goal of the 2025 season to help push the Courage past the Dash. Hannah Betfort scored the Courage's second goal. The Courage are now in ninth place overall in the standings.

    7Portland Thorns

    Prior Ranking: 6

    Result: Beat Chicago Stars 1-0

    Ramifications: The Thorns are are 6-3-4 and are sitting in fifth place in the league standings. Rookie Pietra Tordin scored the Thorns' only goal of the game, and did so in the 59th minute to secure the three points. Despite a slow start to the season, the Thorns are well-positioned to continue climbing up the standings after the international break.

    6Racing Louisville

    Prior Ranking: 10

    Result: Beat Orlando Pride 2-0

    Ramifications: Racing Louisville pulled a stunner, shutting out the Orlando Pride 2-0 at home. Louisville, 6-5-2 overall, have had a strong run the past few games and proved they can not only score, but play quality soccer against a top opponent. In the 30th minute, Arin Wright got her team on the board and in the 68th minute, Taylor Flint solidified the win, burying her penalty kick.

    5Orlando Pride

    Prior Ranking: 2

    Result: Lost to Racing Louisville 2-0

    Ramifications: Orlando couldn't find their groove on the road against Louisville. All of the pieces were in place, and some quick possession soccer was played. However it just wasn't their night. The Pride did have 64 percent possession, but two moments were game-changers on Friday night. The Pride are still positioned in a good spot in the league standings, sitting in second overall with an 8-4-1 record.

    4Washington Spirit

    Prior Ranking: 5

    Result: Drew the San Diego Wave 0-0

    Ramifications: The Washington Spirit earned one point on the road on Sunday, playing the San Diego Wave to a fairly even battle. Despite struggling to keep possession most of the game, the defensive line for the Spirit held down the fort, keeping a strong attacking line from getting on the board.

    The Spirit had won 54 duals on the night, a clear sign of the battles occurring on all parts of the pitch. Up top, Makenna Morris provided a few promising chances for the Spirit, as did Hal Hershfelt in the holding defensive mid spot. The Spirit are in fourth place in the league standings with a record of 7-4-2.

    3San Diego Wave

    Prior Ranking: 3

    Result: Drew the Washington Spirit 0-0

    Ramifications: The Wave hosted the Spirit and dominated the visitors in possession and shots on goal. The Wave held 65 percent possession, and had 16 shots against Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury. For the Wave, Kailen Sheridan had some epic saves. The Wave are in third place in the standings, just one point behind the Pride.

    Prior Ranking: 4

    Result: Beat Bay FC 2-1

    Ramifications: Gotham FC took care of business at home against a strong Bay FC side, thanks to transitions. Esther Gonzalez scored her 10th goal of the season - in just 13 games - to keep her at the top in the Golden Boot race. Despite Ann-Katrin Berger giving up one goal to Bay FC, Gotham was compact and strong defensively, and USWNT star Rose Lavelle earned her first start of the season.

    Result: Beat Angel City 1-0

    Ramifications: At this point, it's the Kansas City Current's world and we're all just here for the celebrations and goals. On Saturday, the Current beat Angel City 1-0 at home thanks to a class finish from Bia Zaneratto in the 68th minute. As it stands, the Current are 11-2-0 and are eights points ahead of the Pride, who sit in second. The Current have now won six straight games.
