Stoke City defender Marc Wilson will miss Euro 2016, Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed.

Wilson had been named in O'Neill's provisional 35-man squad ahead of friendly games against the Netherlands and Belarus, but he did not link up with the squad for their first pre-Euro 2016 training session, with the Ireland boss revealing that he suffered a set-back.

The 28-year-old had been on his way back to fitness after a knee injury and, despite only featuring in four Premier League games this season, O'Neill was happy to give him a chance to play a pat in the tournament in France.

While Wilson has been ruled out of contention, O'Neill has reduced his squad to 31 ahead of the friendly against the Netherlands on May 27, with Paul McShane, Anthony Pilkington, Alex Pearce and Jonny Hayes placed on stand-by.

Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle will link up with the squad later after playing for LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer at the weekend, while David Forde, Keiren Westwood and David Meyler will join up after their play-off commitments with Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City.
