Latest World Cup Odds: Germany drift to 7/1 to retain their crown after Mexico defeat

Second favourites before a ball was kicked in Russia 2018, Germany are now 7/1 (8.00) from 9/2 (5.50) with dabblebet to win back-to-back World Cups after a 1-0 defeat to Mexico in Moscow.

As poor as Joachim Low's side were, the pre-game 6/1 (7.0) underdogs were excellent throughout, defending stoutly and counter attacking with pace and precision when given the opportunity.

The last time Germany failed to win their opening game at a World Cup was 1982 and the side that have typified consistency on the world stage in recent years came up short.

It was also the first time Mexico have beaten the four-time winners in a competitive game in their history.

Hirving Lozano's first half goal was the difference between the pair and Die Mannschaft had no answer to El Tri's deep-lying defensive line after the half time interval.

The strike meant that Germany trailed for the first time in a World Cup match in 563 minutes, such was their dominance in Brazil four years ago where they weren't behind at any stage during the knockout rounds.

Substitutes Mario Gomez and Marco Reus were unable to find a way through when given the opportunity and while their side are still expected to reach the knockout stages, they might now have to settle for second place in Group F with matches against Sweden and South Korea to come.

If that was to be the case it could set up a blockbuster last 16 tie with pre-tournament favourites Brazil, assuming the Selecao top their group after matches against Switzerland, Serbia and Costa Rica.

Only one side has lost their opening World Cup game and gone on to lift the trophy. That came when Spain turned around a defeat to Switzerland to go all the way and at 7/1 (8.0) Germany will reward punters handsomely if they're able to follow suit in Russia.
