Manchester United legend Roy Keane claims the “only reason” that he left the club is because he appealed a fine presented to him after a controversial interview.
Coming off the back of a 4-1 loss to Middlesbrough, the Irishman criticised team-mates he did not believe were putting sufficient effort in to help the cause when speaking to MUTV.

Keane believes people have been “brainwashed” by the idea that he was forced out of the club because of his comments and claims it was actually his decision to appeal the £5,000 fine he was given that pushed then manager Sir Alex Ferguson over his tipping point.
“The only reason I ended up leaving Man United was I appealed a £5,000 fine,” he told the Limerick Leader.
“If I hadn’t appealed the fine I wouldn’t have left Man United.
“Don’t be brainwashed by the propaganda and lies. It is peanuts, you get fined that for being late for training at United.”
Keane left United on November 18, 2005, having played 480 matches for the club. After a short spell with Celtic, he retired from playing.
