2018 World Cup Qualification
France got off to a stuttering start with a 0-0 draw away at Belarus in their opening Group A game, although they found their feet instantly after that with won four wins in a row.
Three wins from their last four ensured they finished top of the group, although a goalless draw by Luxembourg at home in that span will perhaps make punters wary of backing them to go all the way.
Didier Deschamps’ men found the net just 18 times in qualifying, the second-fewest of any UEFA group winner, and the six goals they conceded was only the fifth-best record of the nine group winners.
Tournament History
France’s polarising form in recent editions of the World Cup have been something to behold.
In 1998, they won their maiden trophy on their own patch, but infamously did not even score a goal in 2002 and then lost the final in 2006 following Zinedine Zidane’s famous headbutt.
Another poor showing four years later meant they crashed out in the group stage in South Africa after claiming just a single point, with a quarter-final loss to Germany last time out ending their dreams of glory.
