Betting: Wales 9/4 to win Group B as England falter against Russia

It was a day of firsts at Euro 2016 as Gareth Bale became the first British player to score a direct free kick at a European Championship, scoring with Wales' first shot on target but it was the same story from an England side that failed to make their dominance count against Russia.

Goals from the Real Madrid frontman and Hal Robson-Kanu saw Chris Coleman's side shade an evenly contested game with Slovakia and they are now 9/4 (3.25) to top Group B, 1/10 (1.10) to qualify for the knockout stages and 66/1 (67.0) to win the tournament. Bale has been cut to 22/1 (23.0) to finish as top scorer this summer.

England remain favourites for the group though, priced at 11/10 (2.10) with the same firm, despite conceding a late equaliser to a Russia side who had offered very in terms of attacking threat until the final moments.

Leonid Slutsky's side are now 3/1 (4.0) to win Group B with Slovakia the 20/1 (21.0) outsiders to turn around their fortunes and 12/5 (3.40) to qualify.

Eric Dier's long range effort gave the Three Lions a second half lead but it was not enough.

The Tottenham midfielder has never taken a direct free kick for his club side in the Premier League but the 22-year-old looked to have won the game which England had dominated, especially in the first half which yielded nine shots, the most in a European Championship game since 2004 against Croatia.

Roy Hodgson may rue his decision not to push for a second goal and instead to replace captain Wayne Rooney and Raheem Sterling with the more defensive minded Jack Wilshere and James Milner in an attempt to protect the slender lead.

Their wait for an opening victory at a European Championship goes on having drawn five and lost four of their first tournament encounters.

England are 8/13 (1.62) favourites to get the better of Wales when the two meet on Thursday with the group leaders a 6/1 (7.0) chance to make it two consecutive wins at the tournament. The draw is a 14/5 (3.80) shot with bet365.
