Portugal v Wales Betting Special: Will Bale outshine Ronaldo in Lyon?

Cristiano Ronaldo
The Real Madrid forwards meet for the first time in international football looking to fire their country to the final of Euro 2016 but who will shine in the first semi-final?

As one Spanish sports paper put it, this game not only has a place in the final of Euro 2016 at stake, but also this year's Ballon d'Or winner.

The hyperbolic suggestion from Marca was that either Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale would surely be the front runners for the individual award if they manage to help their respective national team to the final, having already helped their shared club side Real Madrid win the Champions League.

Talk of the prize is of course a little tiresome at this early stage, yet it shows just how much this game is being billed as a battle between the two Madrid stars with Bale and Ronaldo the key men for Wales and Portugal.

Unsurprisingly these two lead bet365's goalscorer markets with Ronaldo offered at evens (2.00) to find the back of the net while Bale can be backed at 9/5 (2.80) to score his fourth goal of the tournament. Indeed of the two it has been the Welshman who has been more prolific, netting one more goal than Ronaldo, with the Portuguese captain only finding the back of the netting in one of the five games in the tournament so far.

Bale meanwhile has opened the scoring on two occasions and the price of 9/2 (5.50) for him to do so once more in the biggest game in the history of Welsh football may appeal, while the price of 9/4 (3.25) for Bale to be Wales' first scorer looks extremely generous. Ronaldo for his part has only opened the scoring once in Portugal's last 14 matches but such is the goalscoring prowess of Europe's most prolific forward that he is the clear favorite to do so in Lyon at 13/5 (3.60)

It is not just the newspapers that have take the idea of this game being about Ronaldo versus Bale, with bet365 offering a market on who will score more goals in the encounter. Ronaldo can be backed at 11/5 (3.20) to outscore his club team-mate, while Bale can be backed at 7/2 (4.50) and a draw between the two is offered at 4/5 (1.80).

The headlines and the buildup will be dominated by the two superstars, yet there will be plenty of other possible scorers on the pitch on Wednesday evening.

Chris Coleman's menhave netted 10 times in the competition, with six Welsh different players getting themselves on the scoresheet. After the Bale, the most profilic has been Hal Robson-Kanu with his sensational goal against Belgium his second of the competition. The former Reading striker can be backed at 4/1 (5.00) to find the back of the net once more, while for Portugal former Manchester United forward Nani is offered at 3/1 (4.00).
