FC Barcelona will look to continue growing its brand in the United States, announcing Thursday a proposal to develop a team in the National Women's Soccer League.
The legendary Spanish club would like to join the 10-team league starting in 2018, according to a release on the club's official website.
Barcelona would become the first European club to have a team in the American professional women's league, with the hopes of expanding the club's global reach after opening an office in New York in September.
U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati acknowledged Barcelona's interest in joining the NWSL in December, after Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said in September that the club was exploring the idea of fielding a team in the league.
It's unclear where Barcelona's NWSL team would be located, although then-NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush told Fox Soccer in November that California is a top expansion target.
