  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Italian star was in Doha on the sidelines of the FIFA Best Awards and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final to be held on Wednesday.

The centre-back also spoke about FIFA's revamped Intercontinental Cup and Club World Cup before touching upon Qatar who are the hosts of the former.

He was lavish in his praise for the way Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup, calling it a 'unique' tournament.

  • WHAT CHIELLINI SAID

On the Serie A title race, Chiellini told GOAL: "It is very beautiful now because we don’t know who will win and I’m happy about that. I’m cheering for Juventus, of course."

He also spoke about the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, stating: "I couldn’t come (in 2022) because I was in the US at the time. I was surprised initially because the World Cup was held in the middle of the season in the winter and Qatar really hosted the tournament in the best way possible. The performances were also very good and there was not much travel and people could watch a lot of matches. It was unique. It is impossible to have another World Cup like Qatar because of many factors like the country size, capacity of the stadiums and more. It was good.

"Qatar showed that it is possible to create a competition in the winter, in the middle of the season and involve all fans from around the world," he added.

The 40-year-old also shared his excitement about the Club World Cup, set to be held at the end of the season.

"The new Club World Cup will be a huge tournament. I would’ve loved to play that tournament."
