  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Tottenham's Europa League celebrations in Bilbao were marred by an unexpected mix-up when Son, along with teammates Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur, did not receive their winners’ medals during the official presentation. According to UEFA, the issue stemmed from an unexpected number of non-playing, injured squad members taking part in the ceremony.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With more players than anticipated lining up, UEFA’s allocation of 30 medals fell short of the demand. Among those who received medals despite not featuring in the match were Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, and Timo Werner, all of whom were ruled out of the final due to injury. The organisation explained that while clubs are permitted to receive up to 50 medals, only 30 were physically brought to the pitch during the ceremony. This logistical oversight meant that key players like Son, Romero, and Bentancur were left momentarily without recognition.

Despite the initial mishap, Son did not have to wait long to get what he had earned. Upon the team’s arrival back in North London, the Spurs captain proudly displayed his Europa League medal as the squad was welcomed with confetti and applause, leaving James Maddison terrified by an unexpected jump scare.
