  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Having been presented to the media as a Real Madrid player, debuting his newly shortened moniker on the back of the club's number 12 shirt, Alexander-Arnold posted footage on Instagram giving a behind-the-scenes look at the day - from boarding a private jet in England, to dressing in his suit for the press conference, and putting on his full Los Blancos kit for photographs on the training pitch.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Becoming the latest Englishman to join Real Madrid, linking up with close friend Jude Bellingham, Alexander-Arnold has been forced to ditch the No.66 shirt he made famous at Liverpool. First-team players in La Liga are limited to numbers from 1-25, while his name change is for simplicity's sake.

"I've always found when I travel to Europe, the whole name situation confuses a lot of people, with there being three names double-barrelled and Alexander-Arnold," he explained. "People call me Arnold, people call me Alexander, people call me Alex, people call me Trent, there's a lot that goes on. So I thought let's make it easy. Trent on the back, be known as Trent, that's my name, so that's what people will call me."

    WHAT NEXT?

Alexander-Arnold was signed during FIFA's early mini-transfer window for Club World Cup participants earlier this month, which meant Real Madrid had to pay a fee to Liverpool, despite impending free agency. But it means he is eligible to play a part in the tournament from the start, and could even make his debut as soon as June 18, when Real Madrid face Al-Hilal in their opening group stage fixture.
