‘Unwritten law’ broken by Mason Greenwood & Jude Bellingham in La Liga as potential date set for Real Madrid star to discover ban fate following Getafe complaint

During a Spanish top-flight fixture on February 1, Los Blancos midfielder Bellingham found himself in direct competition with fellow England international Greenwood. Following one full-blooded challenge between the pair, Bellingham was caught on camera mouthing something in the direction of his domestic rival.

Getafe reported the incident in question to La Liga, calling for it to be included in the match referee’s report. Lip-readers have since been appointed in a bid to determine precisely what was said, amid confusion as to whether Bellingham whispered “rapist” or “rubbish”, with the 20-year-old facing the threat of a four-match ban.

According to Marca, Bellingham will not discover his fate until some point in March. The episode has, however, raised eyebrows in Spain. There is said to be an “unwritten law” in La Liga that sees teams accept that no action will be taken on events not picked up by the match officials – if something sails under the radar, then so be it.

This pact is intended to ensure that whatever happens on the field, stays there. Greenwood, who is on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, is said to be keen for everyone to move on from the incident in question.

The RFEF is reportedly “very surprised” that Getafe have broken from tradition and requested an investigation, with a disciplinary path being opened up that is very rarely explored. The Spanish FA will now decide whether any further action needs to be taken, with clubs across La Liga watching on intently.
