  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana's two errors in the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon have forced United to make a big decision in the summer around their two goalkeepers. Amorim took Onana out of the firing line for Sunday's Premier League game at Newcastle to allow him to 'disconnect' amid all the criticism but back-up 'keeper Altay Bayindir was far from convincing in the 4-1 defeat, giving away the ball and allowing Bruno Guimaraes to complete the drubbing on Tyneside.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are planning to overhaul their squad in the summer, making signing a striker their biggest priority. Goalkeeper was not believed to be a huge area of concern but the club are now reportedly considering signing a replacement for Onana after their faith in him was eroded by his display in Lyon. Amorim was asked by a reporter whether he wanted a new goalkeeper. There was tension in the air when the reporter was not satisfied by the coach's response but Amorim refused to back down.

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

"You choose the questions, I choose the answers," Amorim said. "We need to improve every position on the field; goalkeeper is the same. If our team scores more goals and our strikers are better, we will defend better. Sometimes you have a season where you are underperforming. We are going to make that evaluation for any position in the squad."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Amorim confirmed that Onana would start against Lyon after discussing the decision with goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital. He explained: "I am trying to be clear on things and make the valuation. Andre is ready to return and to start this game. Of course, I have the conversations. But I have my feelings as a coach and as a former player. I make the valuation in the same way I would with other players. But Jorge Vital has a big part in my decision."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ANDRE ONANA?

Harry Maguire urged Onana, who he said would be "feeling like the world is against him", to block out the outside noise and focus on helping steer United into the Europa League semi-finals. "Try your best to ignore it all, focus on your job, come in on a daily basis and do your best. That is all you can do," the defender said. "Tomorrow night is another game of football and you have to say to yourself, 'Do your best and that's all you can do'. I have been in that situation myself. All you can do, day in, day out, is do your best and work as hard as possible."
