  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Guardiola has committed his short-term future to City by signing a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until at least 2026. It's great news for City, who had been facing the daunting challenge of finding a successor to the man who has delivered countless trophies during his eight years in Manchester.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola and City are going in search of their fifth-straight Premier League title, but the season has been overshadowed by the hearing into their 115 alleged breaches of financial rules. While the club maintain their innocence, relegation from the top flight has been raised as one potential sanction if they are found guilty of serious offences.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

According to The Guardian, Guardiola's new deal doesn't include a break clause in the event the champions lose their top-flight status. This means no agreement is in place that would allow the 53-year-old to walk away before 2026, should City be relegated.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss has insisted he will stay at the Etihad Stadium even if he has to manage in a lower division.

"Absolutely I will not consider my future [if] it depends on being here (Premier League) or being in League One," he said last year. "Absolutely. There is more chance to stay if we are in League One than if we were in the Champions League."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

It's been a struggle for City on the pitch in recent weeks. They've lost their past four matches in all competitions, falling five points behind leaders Liverpool in the title race. They'll hope to get back on track when they host Tottenham on Saturday evening.
