Disappointing European signings GFXGOAL

Joao Felix, Folarin Balogun, Kalvin Phillips and the 21 most disappointing signings of the 2023-24 European season - ranked

Transfers are unpredictable. Despite all of the scouting, research and negotiating that goes into bringing in a quality player to a top team, no one can truly know how it will pan out until a ball is kicked.

Sometimes, though, the very worst can happen. Whether it be through poor performances, managerial fallouts, or personal issues, some big-time moves simply don't work. And this season, there have been plenty of duds.

Whether it be the free-spending ways of Paris Saint-Germain, tight budgets of Barcelona or the usually-shrewd schemes of Borussia Dortmund, clubs around the continent have got it wrong. GOAL, therefore, takes a look at some of the worst deals made in European football over the past year...

  • Kim Min-Jae Bayern 02102024(C)Getty Images

    21Kim Min-jae - Bayern Munich (£43m)

Kim hasn't necessarily been awful for Bayern, but after one season, looks a terrible value-for-money signing. The heart of Napoli's title-winning defence in 2022-23, he has been an inconsistent presence at the back for the Bavarians this year, and has only started seven Bundesliga games since the turn of the year.

His campaign, however, will likely be remembered most for his two mistakes against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final that proved costly in Bayern's hopes of European glory.

  • Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest 2023-24Getty

20Gio Reyna - Nottingham Forest (loan)

Reyna needed to get out of Borussia Dortmund in January after falling down the pecking order at Signal Iduna Park; it's just a shame that he picked the wrong landing spot.

Forest seemed an odd choice, such were the English side's goal-scoring struggles and defensive-minded manager, Nuno Espirito Santo. The detractors were proved right, as Reyna registered just one assist in nine appearances during a disappointing loan spell.

  • zaragoza(C)Getty Images

    19Bryan Zaragoza - Bayern Munich (£13m)

Granada's attacking nuisance bolted for the Bundesliga as soon as it became apparent that Thomas Tuchel's side needed attacking help behind Harry Kane in January.

But his move already looks ill-advised, as he made just seven Bundesliga appearances for the deposed champions and is yet to find the net since arriving in Germany.

  • Ansu FatiGetty Images

    18Ansu Fati - Brighton (loan)

How far Ansu has fallen! Deemed surplus to requirements by Xavi at Barcelona, there was reason to believe Fati could things around on loan at Brighton.

But a mixture of injuries and poor form saw him struggle to get into Roberto De Zerbi's team, and another loan move is surely on the horizon this summer.

  • Fabio Carvalho RB Leipzig 2023-24Getty

17Fabio Carvalho - RB Leipzig (loan)

Carvalho ooked like an odd fit from day one for Jurgen Klopp in 2022, but his raw talent couldn't be denied. That's why a loan move to Leipzig - a free-flowing attacking side - made sense.

Still, it didn't work out, as Carvahlo sat on the bench and saw his deal cut short in January. He has since succeeded on loan at Hull City, but his credentials to play at the top level will continue to be called into question.

  • Folarin Balogun Monaco March 2024Getty Images

    16Folarin Balogun - Monaco (£34m)

Last summer, it seemed that Balogun would be ready to kick on and establish himself as one of the best No.9s in Europe after a memorable campaign for Reims.

Monaco spent big to bring the United States striker in from Arsenal, but Balogun has done little to justify the fee, scoring just eight goals to mark a disappointing debut campaign at Stade Louis II.

  • FELIX NMECHA BORUSSIA DORTMUNDGetty Images

    15Felix Nmecha - Borussia Dortmund (£26m)

Nmecha was supposed to be Dortmund's medium-cost, high-potential replacement for Jude Bellingham last summer. Instead, he turned out to be an expensive mistake.

He started his Dortmund career by angering fans after old transphobic and homophobic social media posts resurfaced, and things didn't go much better on the pitch after Nmecha made just 20 Bundesliga appearances - only half of which were starts - for Edin Terzic's side.

  • Joao Cancelo BarcelonaGetty

    14Joao Cancelo - Barcelona (loan)

Cancelo hasn't exactly been woeful for Barcelona, but he is far from the creative beast that made him an impact player in attack for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while he has struggled defensively, too.

The Portugal international hasn't been an elite full-back for two years; his season in Catalunya has confirmed just that.

  • Leonardo Bonucci Union Berlin 2023Getty

13Leonardo Bonucci - Union Berlin (free)

After falling out with Juventus and terminating his contract, Bonucci seemed to be a real coup for Champions League debutants Union Berlin - even at 36-years-old.

The reality was far different, as the legendary Italian centre-back struggled through a first half of the season that left Union out of Europe and fighting against relegation from the Bundesliga, before leaving for Fenerbahce on a free in January.

  • Manuel-Ugarte(C)GettyImages

    12Manuel Ugarte - Paris Saint-Germain (£52m)

Ugarte was the first signing of a busy summer in Paris - and probably the least successful of them all. Luis Enrique entrusted him with a few starts early on, but soon phased the Uruguayan out of the XI when it became clear he couldn't fit in with his preferred possession-heavy style. It will be interesting to see if he sticks around this summer.

  • Renato Sanches RomaGetty Images

    11Renato Sanches - Roma (loan)

Will Sanches ever deliver on his potential? Probably not, at this point. Even at something close to his best he could have proven sneakily good value for Roma this season, but instead played just 262 minutes in all competitions.

Sanches is set to return to PSG, and will likely be ushered out the door once again as he looks to revive a flailing career.

  • Naby Keita Bremen 10072023(C)Getty Images

10Naby Keita - Werder Bremen (free)

Keita was the one big transfer miss of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool tenure, and the midfielder saw his career further plummet after joining Werder Bremen on a free transfer.

He picked up numerous injuries before, in April, he was suspended by the club for an incident in which he refused to board the team bus after being told he wouldn't start against Bayer Leverkusen.

  • Vitor Roque BarcelonaGetty Images

    9Vitor Roque - Barcelona (£25.6m)

Did Xavi actually want to sign Vitor Roque? That's not clear, but he certainly hasn't been keen to use the young Brazilian since his arrival in January.

Barca blew a big chunk of their transfer budget on the teenage striker, who has spent most of his time in Catalunya riding the bench. His agent has threatened a move away from the club, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him go - especially if the Blaugrana are offered a handsome fee.

  • Joao Felix Barcelona 2023-24Getty

    8Joao Felix - Barcelona (loan)

Another false dawn for Felix. The Portuguese playmaker enjoyed a few successful weeks during hi time at Barcelona, but his familiar struggles soon emerged. By the end of it all, he was left starved for minutes and unable to make an impact for a Barca team enduring a miserable title defence. Quite what Atletico Madrid do with him now is anyone's guess.

  • Jordan Henderson Ajax 2023-24Getty Images

    7Jordan Henderson - Ajax (free)

What a miserable 12 months it has been for Henderson. The former Liverpool captain flopped in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ettifaq and didn't do much for his credentials in the Netherlands after joining Ajax in January.

He wasn't awful for the Eredivisie side, but he wasn't the impact signing they needed, either. It has all amounted to him being left out of England's Euro 2024 squad, and he very well might have kicked his last ball for the Three Lions.

  • Oriol Romeu Barcelona 2023-24Getty Images

    6Oriol Romeu - Barcelona (£7m)

A 31-year-old journeyman midfielder, who had been eased out of Southampton just 12 months prior, brought into replace Sergio Busquets? It sounded wrong from day one, and so it has proved.

Romeu was solid for a few games, but quickly fell out of the Barca XI. By the end of the season he was watching from the bench as centre-back Andreas Christensen took his minutes at the No.6.

  • Mason Mount Manchester United 2023-24Getty

    5Mason Mount - Manchester United (£60m)

Chelsea don't get much right in the transfer market, but the £60 million that they were able to bank for the sale of Mount looks like a pretty solid bit of business right now.

Mount has struggled for both form and fitness since arriving at Old Trafford, and thus played only a bit-part in a truly miserable season for the Red Devils.

  • Kalvin Phillips West Ham United 2024Getty Images

4Kalvin Phillips - West Ham (loan)

Phillips opted to stay at Man City despite interest in him over the summer, but barely got a look in during the first half of his second season at the Etihad Stadium. When he did eventually depart on loan in January, things didn't get much better, either.

He gifted Bournemouth a goal on his West Ham debut, and was sent-off against Nottingham Forest on just his fourth league appearance for the club. In total, he made just 14 appearances for the Hammers, with only three of those coming from the start.

He is still on the books at City, but seems set to leave this summer - especially after failing to make the cut for Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad.

  • Moises Caicedo Chelsea West Ham Premier League 2023-24Getty

    3Moises Caicedo - Chelsea (£115m)

Chelsea smashed the British transfer record to lure Caicedo away from Brighton, seeing off competition from Liverpool, who refused to match their staggering £115 million ($147m) bid. The Blues needed Caicedo to be a real game-changer right from the off, but he crumbled under the weight of expectation.

To Caicedo's credit, he has finished the campaign strongly, and it's easy to forget he's still just 22-years-old, while he also had to remain professional during a period when he feared for his family's safety amid a wave of violence in his homeland. But there is just no escaping that price tag, and as of right now, Caicedo must be considered a massive failure.

  • Randal Kolo Muani PSG 2023-24Getty

    2Randal Kolo Muani - Paris Saint-Germain (£77m)

The Parisians spent big to bring in Kolo Muani, presumbaly to keep Kylian Mbappe - his strike partner for France - happy. But a move made out of appeasement now looks like a true waste of money.

Kolo Muani is way down the pecking order in Paris, and has just nine goals to his name this season.

  • Sandro-Tonali(C)GettyImages

    1Sandro Tonali - Newcastle (£60m)

How could Newcastle not know that their club-record signing had a severe gambling addiction, and that he would continue to bet on games even when serving an initial suspension?

Tonali looked like a massive coup when he arrived from AC Milan. Now, he is a massive shambles, who will have to prove himself in August.
