MLS side LAFC sign World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Tottenham

The Los Angeles-based side acquired the veteran goalkeeper after an 11-year stint with Spurs. The ex-France international, who helped lead them to the 2022 World Cup final, lost the captain's armband and a starting role in 2023, moving to the third-choice goalkeeper under new boss Ange Postecoglou. Now, he's set to embark on a new adventure with LAFC in MLS, after the club's official announcement on Saturday.

“Hugo is arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation and a proven winner. We are incredibly excited that Hugo has chosen LAFC for the next phase of his illustrious career,” said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington. “He brings unprecedented leadership experience at the highest levels of football, which we know will greatly benefit our Club in our pursuit of more trophies. I would like to thank Tottenham for their collaboration, and I join all of Los Angeles in extending a warm welcome to Hugo, his wife Marine, and their three children to LAFC.”

LAFC recently made the 2023 MLS Cup championship game, but fell short to the Columbus Crew 2-1. Canada international Maxime Crepeau was the starting shotstopper for the Black and Gold during their 2023 campaign, but with Lloris's arrival, it's unlikely that the two parties agree on a new deal. The 29-year-old is an active unrestricted free agent now.

Lloris made 447 appearances for Tottenham from 2012-2023, while earning 145 caps with France along the way. A true stalwart for Spurs, Lloris is now set to depart and continue his journey in the USA.

Lloris was appointed Spurs captain in 2015 and occupied the role for eight years until the 2023-24 campaign.

The MLS side will have to go about negotiating a deal for the 37-year-old now, while Lloris and his family will look to pack their bags for their forthcoming transatlantic journey. MLS preseason begins in January, so it's perfect timing for both parties to get the move over the line.
