Lionel Messi warned he wouldn't get 'special protection' in Saudi Pro League as Riyad Mahrez gives honest take on Inter Miami superstar's proposed transfer to Al-Ahli

A move to the Middle East for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is being speculated on as his contract at Inter Miami runs down. A 12-month extension option in that deal is yet to be triggered by the Argentine GOAT.

He may yet agree to stay in the United States, having been joined in Florida by another familiar face in the form of fellow World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul, but questions continue to be asked of his future.

Having previously shunned advances from the Saudi Pro League, it is being claimed that Al-Ahli are readying another lucrative offer for Messi. If they were to secure his signature, then the South American would be reunited with eternal rival Ronaldo - who recently committed to a new two-year contract at Al-Nassr.

Former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez is already on the books at Al-Ahli and has told CARRE of the links to Messi and what he could expect in Saudi: “It's our childhood dream. As footballers, we saw him a lot; he's our role model. It would be truly exceptional to play with him. He's playing as a 10 and me on the right, switching from time to time. Would there be 'protection'? There's no special protection for dribblers in the Saudi league. I've taken a lot of hits.”

Messi has grown accustomed to receiving rough treatment down the years, as opponents endeavour to contain his remarkable talent, and he has never been one to back down from a challenge. He has a big decision to make on his future at club level as the countdown continues to a World Cup title defence with Argentina in 2026.
