  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid had earlier confirmed on Thursday that Mbappe had been admitted to a hospital in the United States after falling ill with a severe gastrointestinal infection. The illness forced the 26-year-old to sit out Madrid’s first fixture of the tournament - a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on Wednesday - raising initial concerns about his availability for the remainder of the competition.

    WHAT REAL MADRID SAID

In a second update issued on Thursday, Real Madrid announced that Mbappe had been discharged after responding positively to medical treatment.

The statement read: "Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid camp. Mbappe will continue with specific medical treatment and will progressively rejoin team activity."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid’s preparations took a hit when Mbappe missed Tuesday’s open training session in Palm Beach Gardens. A club spokesperson confirmed he was experiencing a fever, which later turned out to be a symptom of gastroenteritis. As a result, he was omitted from the matchday squad for Wednesday’s clash with Al-Hilal, where young striker Gonzalo Garcia stepped in and made an immediate impact, scoring the game’s opening goal. The Saudi side equalised through a Ruben Neves penalty, and Madrid were forced to settle for a draw after Federico Valverde missed a last-minute spot kick.

WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE & REAL MADRID?

With Real Madrid scheduled to face Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday in their next Club World Cup fixture, it remains uncertain whether Mbappe will feature. Given his recent illness and the physical toll associated with recovery from gastroenteritis, Alonso is expected to take a cautious approach regarding his star forward’s involvement.
