'Never saw a game like this' - Jurgen Klopp left raging by 'crazy decisions' as Liverpool suffer first defeat of the season at Tottenham

The Reds were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Curtis Jones saw an initial yellow card upgraded to a red after a VAR review following a challenge on Yves Bissouma.

Liverpool thought they had scored the opening goal afterwards, but it was ruled out for an offside on Luis Diaz and Spurs went on to break the deadlock moments later.

Cody Gakpo pulled the visitors level just before the break, but the challenge became even more difficult when Diogo Jota was sent off with two yellow cards in the space of a minute and Spurs went on to seal the win with the help of a Joel Matip own goal right at the end.

The defeat is Liverpool's first of the season and saw Spurs leapfrog them into second place in the Premier League.

The Reds have now had four red cards across their first six matches in the Premier League, which is as many as they received in their previous 168 games and Klopp feels some of the calls in Saturday's match were particularly egregious.

"I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions," he told Sky Sports.

"We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

"[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky."

Klopp's team will hope to bounce back when they take on Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday.
