Joel Matip back in the Premier League? Ex-Liverpool defender in talks over surprise free transfer after Anfield exit

The 33-year-old Cameroonian defender exited the Premier League after eight years when his contract with the Reds expired at the end of last season. However, he could now make a comeback to the English top flight as West Ham have shown interest in the centre-back, according to talkSPORT.

The Hammers signed players like Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo while the summer transfer window was open, but they also parted ways with defenders Thilo Kehrer, Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd. The report adds that new manager Julen Lopetegui is looking to further strengthen the team's backline and as a result, the club have initiated talks with Matip.

During his time with Liverpool, Matip made 201 appearances across all competitions and was an integral part of Jurgen Klopp's side that won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Lopetegui's side have managed to win just one of their first three Premier League matches and will be back in action after the international break on September 14, as they take on London rivals Fulham.
