Guglielmo Vicario reveals he 'played 60 minutes with a broken ankle' against Man City as Tottenham goalkeeper gives update on serious injury blow after surgery

Spurs stunned the English champions at Etihad Stadium on Saturday as they registered a thumping 4-0 win inspired by a James Maddison brace. It was City's fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions and third successive loss in the Premier League.

While Spurs thoroughly enjoyed the thumping win, their goalkeeper Vicario was seen limping while leaving the Etihad Stadium. On Monday, first, the club confirmed that the goalkeeper underwent surgery on his right ankle and later in the day, the Italian provided an update on his condition while revealing that he had played for 60 minutes with a broken bone in his ankle. Vicario made five saves during that time despite the pain.

On his Instagram, the Italian shot-stopper wrote: "Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect. I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately, there was no way around this one. I needed surgery.

"I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while. A massive thank you to the doctors and the staff. The operation went well, and from tomorrow I’ll be working hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you again. Thank you to the Spurs fans for all the love. See you soon on the pitch."

Ange Postecoglou's side will be next seen in action in the Europa League as they take on AS Roma on Thursday, before returning to Premier League action against Fulham on Sunday.
