  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Back in 2023, Haaland's dad was escorted out of his executive box at the Santiago Bernabeu after he reportedly taunted Madrid fans below and threw peanuts at them. A security guard moved him away as cries of 'tonto!' (meaning 'idiot') echoed around. Now, Haaland has dug up that old rivalry once more by posting a photo of a big bowl of peanuts on X, captioned 'Ready for battle', ahead of City's return to Real Madrid's home on Wednesday night.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It's a huge night for Haaland's old team as City look to avoid an early exit from the Champions League. Guardiola's side may have scraped through the league phase of the restructured competition but they face Madrid in the second leg a goal down, following a 2-1 defeat secured by a late winner from England star Jude Bellingham. The pressure's all on City.

    WHAT HAALAND SAID

After that initial Bernabeu stadium ejection, Haaland took to X and wrote: "Ok. RM was not happy we were celebrating KDB goal. Other than than that we had to move because RM fans not happy with 1-1." Clearly, he hasn't quite let go of that grudge.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY?

City's latest trip to Madrid could be a potentially season-defining occasion for Pep Guardiola's side. The Premier League title is now out of reach but success in the Champions League could shine a more positive light on what has been an unexpectedly disastrous campaign so far. Travelling away from home to one of Europe's most intimidating stadiums, City have a one-goal deficit to recover if they want to progress to the last 16.
