Charlotte FC's pursuit of Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron ends abruptly

Earlier this week, GOAL confirmed that Charlotte FC had made an ambitious offer for Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron. It came hours after a deal for Dutch international Calvin Stengs collapsed, with the Feyenoord attacker and the Eastern Conference side failing to come to an agreement.

Now, on MLS transfer deadline day, GOAL confirms that Almiron will not be joining the Crown City this summer, either. Sources said that Almiron and Charlotte were able to agree to terms, but Newcastle and the MLS side were not able to come to an agreement over a transfer fee for the Paraguayan.

As a result, no deal will be happening, barring unforeseen developments before the window closes at midnight ET.

Charlotte have now missed out on two of their primary transfer targets this window in Stengs and Almiron, but they were able to secure a deal for U.S. international Tim Ream last week.

The 36-year-old defender bolsters Dean Smith's back line instantly, while providing the club leadership and stability as they embark on the latter-half of their campaign.

Sources told GOAL that Charlotte also inquired about Tottenham midfielder and Argentina international Giovani Lo Celso this window, but deemed Almiron a priority. With that deal collapsed, it's unknown if CLT will continue to pursue Lo Celso.

Charlotte have also added Israeli forward Idan Toklomati this window, while also seeing talented Polish forward Karol Swiderski return from a loan in Italy with Hellas Verona.

Newcastle begin the Premier League season this weekend against Southampton. Charlotte, meanwhile, return to MLS action on Aug. 24 against the New York Red Bulls.
