Final push for the Golden Boot

After 62 games in the United States, it all comes down to Chelsea vs PSG, England vs France, and Enzo Maresca vs Luis Enrique. One team will be named the best club side in football at MetLife Stadium this weekend.

Aside from that, there’s also a Golden Boot to be won. Based on the current situation, it’ll be shared by four players from four teams, but a few players have a chance to change that. However, it remains to be seen whether they succeed, as they only have one game to do it.

We examine the front-runners, as well as those that could catch up to them. With goals expected in New Jersey, there is a chance to see an out-and-out winner. Although 10 players sit on three goals, only two will be in the final. However, can one of them succeed in clinching the title?

The current leaders are out

Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Garcia, Serhou Guirassy, and Marcos Leonardo have left their mark on the competition in the USA. Moreover, all four could still share the top scorer title at the end of the CWC. It’s probably a long shot for them to be completely usurped.

Garcia was the favourite ahead of the semi-finals after his performance for Real Madrid, but then they were dominated by PSG. His four goals could still be enough for a shared award. However, their participation ended rather disappointingly, as they could have never expected such a heavy defeat.

Di Maria’s four penalties have put him in contention, Guirassy has been as prolific as ever, and Leonardo was predictably good. The four current leaders have all shown their quality throughout the tournament. Now they just have to hope that somebody doesn’t score a brace on Sunday.

There’s a very high chance that these guys share the award, though it wouldn’t be surprising if another player also ties with them.

Two PSG stars

Ousmane Dembele is back after having to wait for his chance at the CWC due to injury. The Frenchman has been very prolific this season and has netted twice during PSG’s march to the final. He would require a brace to tie with the top scorers, but is he capable of scoring it?

Meanwhile, Fabian Ruiz has had a tremendous time in the States. Having netted twice against Los Blancos, he’s scored three goals in six games, and he’s also provided an assist. As the midfielder isn’t known for being a goalscorer, there’s no real expectation for him to be on target in the final.

Enrique’s men are the favourites and will be flying high after dominating Xabi Alonso’s Los Merengues. Dembele can cause problems for the Blues, as he has scored 51 goals and assists this season. He’s scored two or more goals in a game nine times in 2024/25.

Both have an opportunity to match the current leaders in scoring. After Dembele netted his 35th goal of the season, it would be unwise to bet against him.

Chelsea’s biggest contender

Pedro Neto scored three goals in three games as Chelsea made it through to the quarter-finals of the competition. However, he hasn’t contributed a goal or assist in either of the two following games. Maresca’s side have marched on, with him playing a key role, but they also have other goal scorers.

Meanwhile, Joao Pedro is also a contender, and his brace in the semi-final gave him the perfect start. He’s now among four players who go into the final with two goals to their name. However, the Parisiens don’t tend to concede two goals.

The Portuguese international will almost certainly start in New Jersey, but it’s uncertain whether he can add to his tally. PSG are very difficult to score against, and even more difficult to beat. Neto has been excellent, yet he isn’t the Blues’ primary goalscorer.
