Arsenal star Mesut Ozil looked to have put the world champions in trouble by missing their third penalty, but Southampton striker Graziano Pelle duly shot wide.

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger then had the chance to win it, but ballooned his kick over the crossbar.

Matteo Darmian, Schweinsteiger's club-mate at United, went on to miss Italy's final effort.

Sunderland's Emanuele Giaccherini escaped the English curse - but he spent the entirety of last season on loan at Bologna.
