    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in a Premier Soccer League match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

It was a key victory for the Brazilians in their quest for a record-extending eighth league title.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has pointed at how they managed to get the better of Chiefs.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“We expected that Chiefs would overload the midfield with numbers but we knew that would give opportunities on the sides, and we have capacity on the sides, that’s how we scored as you remember their full back… they had midfielders controlling the inside,” Cardoso said as per iDiski Times.

“And their wingers controlling the insides, trying to close our build-ups inside, so their full-back was jumping on our full-back, but we knew then we have two in front and if we could attract one centre-back, eventually we could play the ball into the space.

“So Peter made that movement, Iqraam went into space, received the ball and he passed to Lucas to make the goal," added the Portuguese trainer.

"As I said it’s the players who interpret things, it was a very hard game, very tactical, very well prepared by coach Nabi."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It was a positive Saturday for Sundowns who also witnessed their closest PSL title challengers Orlando Pirates drop points following a 2-0 defeat by Marumo Gallants.

That left the Brazilians 18 points clear at the top of the table, making it a huge task for the Buccaneers to catch up with them.

Second-placed Pirates have, however, played four games fewer than Sundowns, but it still remains a big job for them to overtake the Tshwane giants.
