Caf Champions League boost for Motsepe's Mamelodi Sundowns after signing cup-tied Jayden Adams from Caf Confederation Cup challengers Stellenbosch

The continental football governing body has made a decision that will give Masandawana some reprieve in Africa.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Mamelodi Sundowns signed midfielder Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch in January.

    The Bafana Bafana star had already played in the Caf Confederation Cup with the Cape Winelands side.

    But Caf have adjusted the rules to allow him to feature in the Caf Champions League with Masandawana.

    WHAT CAF SAID

    "The Confederation Africaine de Football, today [Thursday] changed the player registration Regulations of the Caf Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, to allow football clubs to register a player, for the Caf Champions League or the CAF Confederation Cup, who has participated in either of these Caf Competitions, for another football club, within the same football season," Caf said in a statement.

    "By changing these Player Registration Regulations, the Caf Champions League and the Caf Confederation Cup Regulations are now similar to the Uefa Champions League and the Uefa Europa League Player Registration Regulations.

    "The amendments to these Regulations will contribute to the Caf Champions League and the CafF Confederation Cup becoming attractive and appealing to football fans, TV spectators and to sponsors and partners in Africa and worldwide,' the continental football governing body added.

    These changes may also improve the quality of the African football clubs that are participating in the Fifa Club World Cup 2025 that will be held in the United States in June–July 2025.

    The Caf EXCO also took a resolution extending the Player Registration deadline of the Caf Champions League and the Caf Confederation Cup to 28 February 2025."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Caf's decision is a welcome development for the Brazilians who will be hoping Adams will bring the much-needed experience to their Champions League campaign.

    Having been at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament as well as participating in the Confederation Cup with Stellenbosch, Adams has been gaining experience.

    That is what the Brazilians need as they seek to win the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

    The Brazilians will add new signings Lucas Suarez and Keano Cupido to their to their Champions League list and still have time to do that.

    But for now, Sundowns' focus will be on domestic duties and they host Golden Arrows in a Premier Soccer League match on Sunday.
