Valentijn Driessen cannot understand Ajax's transfer policy. The journalist says the Amsterdam club should have signed a number six long ago. And the players they have brought in for big money this summer are, in his words, "absolutely useless".
Ajax are still looking for a defensive midfielder. "That is obviously unbelievable as well," Driessen says on the subject in Vandaag Inside. "Henderson was the ideal profile. He has already been gone for more than a year now, and in three transfer windows you still haven't signed a number six. A defensive midfielder, how simple can it be?"
Then he offers a suggestion himself: Darko Nejasmic of NEC. "Go and get that boy! He is a good player. You can go and get him. But now you are a week away from the end of the transfer window, and you still have to bring someone in."
Among the players Ajax have already signed this summer are Marc ter Stegen (loan), Julian Brandt (free transfer), Daley Blind (free transfer), Caio Henrique (€10.5 million) and Marcos Leonardo (almost €20 million).
Driessen is particularly unimpressed by the latter two signings. "Everything that has been bought, that a lot of money has been paid for, is useless. The striker, nearly twenty million, is absolutely useless. Benfica did not sell him for nothing."
As for the left-back, he adds: "The left-back, he is a Brazilian, he was injured for a very long time. And after that he has not played a good match again. So everything that a lot of money has been paid for is not delivering."
Turning to another target, Driessen says Ajax are now chasing Viktor Tsygankov of Girona. "Now they are working on a Ukrainian again," he says. "But since when have they been able to play football in Ukraine? That is one. Two: he plays for a club, Girona, who were simply relegated with this player. They are looking for someone who runs a lot. But this boy does not run."
