Shevchenko’s 20-year Ukraine record broken by Oleksandr Zinchenko

Andriy Shevchenko’s 20-year-old record for Ukraine has been broken by FC Ufa midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea striker was the youngest goalscorer for Ukraine’s national team at the age of 19 years and 214 days when he found the net in a friendly against Turkey in May 1996.

But at 19 years and 165 days, Zinchenko scored in Ukraine’s 4-3 victory over Romania to surpass Shevchenko on Sunday evening.

Zinchenko began his career at Shakhtar Donetsk’s academy but failed to make a senior appearance for them before moving to FC Ulfa, who escaped the relegation zone by a single point in the Russian Premier League this season.

Zinchenko had been battling a minor injury ahead of Euro 2016 but was called into Ukraine’s provisional squad.

Mykhaylo Fomenko’s side begin their Euro 2016 campaign against Germany on June 12, while they will also face Poland and Northern Ireland in Group C.
