Barcelona thumped Elche 5-0, yet Lamine Yamal stole the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The teenager endured a miserable night, both for his display on the pitch and his emotional reaction to being substituted. The scene sparked widespread controversy inside the Catalan club and across social media.
According to French website "Foot Mercato", Yamal fell well below his usual level, unable to leave his attacking mark or make a difference against Elche. Several of his team-mates shone in his absence. Fermin Lopez scored twice, new arrival Karim Adeyemi netted his first official goals in a Barcelona shirt, and Anthony Gordon provided two assists after coming off the bench.
Throughout the match Yamal looked less influential than the rest of the attacking line, never producing his usual threat and staying far from creating chances or troubling the Elche goal. Hansi Flick took him off in the 65th minute and brought on Gordon in his place. The change laid bare the coach's dissatisfaction with the player's performance that night.
Matters did not stop at a modest display. Yamal's exit turned into the most dramatic scene of the match. He sat down on the substitutes' bench looking angry and frustrated, then showed signs of being deeply affected in a shot that spread quickly across social media and seized the attention of the Spanish press.
Several Barcelona players and members of the technical staff rushed over to console him, Raphinha and Karim Adeyemi among them, trying to calm the young forward after he left the pitch. His frustration remained visible long after the match ended.
Even the final whistle did not end it. Spanish newspaper "Sport" reported that Yamal stayed visibly affected inside the stadium tunnels, which only sharpened the questions about the real reasons behind his outburst. This was not merely the substitution of a player who fell short in a match his side won by a clean sweep of five goals.
The scene opened the door to more than one interpretation. Some observers linked his distress to the uncertain situation surrounding his close team-mate Alejandro Balde, amid reports the full-back could leave Barcelona. Another reading ties Yamal's reaction to the pressure he is under and the dip in his level since he played for his national team at the 2026 World Cup.
