Wrexham told to 'work their team around' former Man Utd star if Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney can convince free agent to complete 'brave' Championship transfer

Wrexham are in the process of bolstering their squad for their first campaign in the second tier of English football for 43 years, having sealed promotion to the Championship last season as runners-up in League One. Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have reportedly given manager Phil Parkinson a hefty transfer war chest in a bid to make the final step to the Premier League, which he has already dipped into to sign Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie.

The Red Dragons are also being linked with several players boasting Premier League experience, including Jamie Vardy, Tom Cairney and Lewis O’Brien. Former Man Utd midfielder Christian Eriksen is another said to be on Parkinson's radar, with the Denmark international now a free agent after leaving Old Trafford at the end of June.

United legend Paul Parker would not be surprised to see Eriksen take on a new challenge in Wales. Speaking to GOAL - in association with Gameshub - Parker said of how Wrexham could accommodate the 33-year-old: "Wrexham have that little bit about them, now because of the American influence and the money, but they're going to have to work their team around him. It would be a brave move for him, because it's more physical in the Championship than the Premier League. It would epitomise what he's all about because he's still got an appetite to put himself under pressure and test himself. It would be incredible if he takes that on at his age."

Former Ajax and Tottenham playmaker Eriksen has made a miraculous return to the top level since suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020. He made a full recovery but was subsequently released by Italian giants Inter. Brentford then brought Eriksen back to the Premier League on a free transfer before he joined United in July 2022, and he went on to make 107 appearances for the Red Devils, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Wrexham may struggle to convince Eriksen to stay in English football, though, because he admitted to being keen on a move abroad during his farewell interview with MUTV. "I would rather get away from the Premier League," he said. "I feel I have had my turn in the Premier League, so I am looking outside the English borders. When I moved from Tottenham to Inter, it wasn’t the plan for me to go back to England. I’ve been there for three and a half years again since then, so you can never say never, but the priority is for me to leave."
