  • McKennie could reportedly stay at Juve
  • Midfielder was linked with moves to MLS, other leagues
  • McKennie's contract ends after this season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Weston McKennie could be staying in Turin after all.

The 25-year-old American Juventus midfielder, whose contract expires in 2025, has been at the center of transfer rumors all summer, with potential moves from MLS to the Premier League being heavily speculated. His club publicly told the media he was no longer part of their plans, despite McKennie having one of the best seasons of his career with seven assists.

Yet, the uncertainty around McKennie's destination for this season could be coming to an end as Juventus are now reportedly open to keeping him on the squad ahead of their opener against Como Monday.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

McKennie and Juventus have had a rocky relationship over the past few years, despite a few strong seasons from the midfielder.

He fell out of favor at the club during the 2022-23 season and was sent away with a loan to Leeds United which had a potential buy cause in the deal. Unfortunately for McKennie and Leeds, the club was relegated in that campaign and the American returned to Turin.

McKennie responded with a strong 2023-24 season under Massimiliano Allegri. However after Juventus finished third, Allegri was fired and Thiago Motta was hired. Motta named several players who were not in his plans, including McKennie.

With McKennie unable to secure a move away from the club, it looks increasingly likely that the U.S. international will stay and fight for his place.

Fellow American Timothy Weah remains a part of the squad and is training at striker for the new Juve boss.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MCKENNIE

McKennie could see some time on the pitch when Juventus host Como in their 2024-25 season opener on Aug. 19.
