  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Midfielder Andi Sullivan was stretchered off in stoppage-time of the Washington Spirit's match against Orlando Pride Sunday night. The Spirit have since confirmed that the U.S. international, and heart of their midfield, has a torn ACL.

    She's been placed on the season-ending injury list (SEI) and will miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign, including the NWSL playoffs.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Sullivan has started all 21 matches for the Spirit this season, becoming the cornerstone of their midfield, while also scoring two goals.

    Drafted by the NWSL side in 2018 with the first overall pick, she has made 134 appearances for the club. Internationally, Sullivan has made 52 appearances for the USWNT, and started all four matches at the 2023 FIFA World Cup for the U.S.

    Sullivan played her collegiate soccer at Stanford, where she scored 20 goals and recorded 19 assists in 87 appearances. Captain for three-years with the Cardinal, she was also named the MAC Hermann Trophy winner as the top player in the country after her senior year.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SULLIVAN AND THE SPIRIT?

    Sullivan will now face rehabilitation to return for the 2025 season. The Spirit, meanwhile, will be without her for the 2024 NWSL playoffs, which is a massive blow for manager Jonatan Giraldez.

    The postseason begins Nov. 8.
