Santos coach Cuca uncertain over Neymar's availability on synthetic turf for Palmeiras cup tie

Neymar's availability for the first leg of Santos' Copa do Brasil quarter-final tie against Palmeiras at Nubank Parque remains in serious doubt due to the stadium's synthetic surface. The 34-year-old forward has long been an outspoken critic of artificial pitches, consistently avoiding them to protect against recurring ankle issues. The dilemma follows Santos' 1-1 draw against Mirassol in the Brasileirao over the weekend, shifting immediate focus to their cup commitments.

Santos head coach Cuca confirmed that he has yet to make a final decision on the forward's involvement and intends to hold internal discussions with the squad beforehand.

Addressing the team's condition and Neymar's status ahead of the testing away trip, Cuca said, as quoted by ESPN Brazil: "I don't have an answer to that yet, but tomorrow when we report back, we'll see how the whole squad is doing. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and with the entire squad so we can decide what to do.

"The match against Palmeiras is going to be very tough; they are a very good side, and it's impossible to deny they are the favourites. But we'll work hard to do our best on Wednesday."

Neymar's reluctance to play on artificial grass stems from an ankle sprain sustained against Atletico Mineiro, after which he vented his frustration on social media: "It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***."

When pressed by reporters in the mixed zone regarding the Palmeiras clash following Santos' 2-1 Copa Sudamericana win over Macara, Neymar remained non-committal: "Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday. I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf]."

That hesitation aligns with his previous critique of the venue: "Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible. Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch."

Santos face an intense fixture run, travelling to Palmeiras in the cup before heading to Corinthians for a crucial league derby on August 30. The Peixe then host Palmeiras in the return quarter-final legat Vila Belmiro three days later. Should Neymar be held back in midweek, Cuca will hope the break leaves his talisman fully refreshed for the decisive second leg on home turf.
