'I love this man' - Ryan Reynolds reveals Hugh Jackman helped him with Emmy acceptance for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary with broken award

The Deadpool star, who dressed up as his on-screen alter ego for the occasion, saw the series focused on the exploits of the Welsh football team that he co-owns alongside Rob McElhenney scoop a prestigious prize at the first high-profile awards show of 2024.

Neither Reynolds nor McElhenney were on the star-studded Emmy guestlist, but they did send a message of thanks to those recognising their achievements and those of the production company behind ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. They were, however, short of a golden statuette once realising that they had won.

Reynolds sought to address that issue having watched Wrexham’s FA Cup third round win over Shrewsbury in the company of Wolverine star Jackman. He happened to have an Emmy to hand, but said accolade was not in one piece. Reynolds has posted on Instagram: “In order to accept the Emmy for Welcome to Wrexham, I needed to borrow someone else’s. Of course I called Hugh Jackman. Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t sure if he had an Emmy. Turns out he does. He gives it to me, then asks, ‘Is it supposed to look like that?’ It isn’t. It’s broken. I love this man.”

The second series of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ covered the club’s record-breaking National League title triumph in 2022-23. A third season is on the way, with the Red Dragons looking to secure another promotion in 2024 as they sit among the League Two frontrunners.
