Quincy Promes extradited to Netherlands after arrest in Dubai as ex-Ajax star set to serve long prison sentence for drug trafficking and stabbing his cousin

According to De Telegraaf, Promes has been extradited from Dubai to Netherlands and is set to begin serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence. The former Ajax and Spartak Moscow forward was arrested by Dubai police earlier in June following a request from the Dutch authorities and was flown back on a private chartered jet arranged by the Dutch judiciary.

The sentence stems from two convictions: six years for involvement in cocaine trafficking and 18 months for stabbing his cousin. After landing in Netherlands, Promes was sent straight to a prison centre where he will remain under custody.

Promes, 33, had previously requested a delay in executing his sentence, offering to return voluntarily to Netherlands in an attempt to continue his football career during his appeal process. Dutch authorities turned down the offer, meanwhile, pointing out that extraditeion was already underin progress. To avoid public exposure and security issues, the Dutch court decided for a private return.

The former Dutch international had been residing in Dubai and continued to appear in the media until his sudden arrest. His arrest and extradition are the latest events in a long legal case that has cast a dark shadow over his football successes.

Depending on the result of the ongoing appeal processes, Promes will be eligible for parole in 2030 at the earliest.

Promes is expected to remain in Dutch custody as he serves his sentence, though the exact location of the detention has not been disclosed. He will not be placed in prisons where co-suspects are held, such as Vught and Zaanstad. The appeals process is still going on, but the Dutch legal system has decided that Promes's sentence execution is more important than his request to delay it.
