The visitors headed into the contest with a remarkable streak of scoring in 40 games in a row but, for long periods, Newcastle looked like they would end that run as Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes went close for the Premier League outfit.
However, the Magpies failed to take their chances and Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford silenced the home fans in the 58th minute with a terrific header from Jules Kounde's cross. The 27-year-old then doubled the away team's lead with an unstoppable strike from just outside the box nine minutes later.
Hopes of a late comeback were sparked when Gordon swept in Jacob Murphy's pinpoint delivery in the 90th minute but they ultimately fell to a narrow defeat in their Champions League opener.
