  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Major League Soccer has terminated the contract of Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez following a probe into allegations that he violated the league’s gambling policies for the second time, the league announced Wednesday.

    Hernandez, 26, will not be eligible for reinstatement until 2026. The midfielder's initial gambling violation came in October 2021, where he was suspended for the rest of the season. Following the suspension, Hernandez played in all of Sporting's 34 league matches the following year.

    MLS said that no inside information was shared or that any match was compromised by the Hernandez.

    Hernandez had a diminished role for Sporting this season, only making seven appearances for the club.

    Overall, Hernandez has made 76 appearances for SKC (33 starts), scoring four goals and providing six assists during his time at the club.

    The team, which sits 12th in MLS, will aim to keep its slim postseason hopes alive when it travels to Seattle to face the Sounders on Sept. 15.
