MLS Power Rankings: Brian White and Vancouver Whitecaps return to the top, Orlando City extend unbeaten streak to 12, Lionel Messi's Inter Miami plummet

The stars came out on Matchday 15, with goals galore.

Seven matches saw at least one team score three goals, while Atlanta United stole the show as the highest scorers of the weekend with a brilliant 4-2 win over FC Cincinnati on Sunday. Only three matches resulted in clean sheets, with scoring prowess taking center-stage across the Matchday.

Charlotte FC secured one of the best results of the weekend, stunning the Columbus Crew 3-2, while San Diego FC secured a last-ditch victory over the LA Galaxy courtesy of a Chucky Lozano winner.

Lionel Messi, meanwhile, scored a goal of the year contender with a sublime free kick - but it wasn't enough as Inter Miami just barely earned a point in a 3-3 draw with the Philadelphia Union. Then, in a battle of USMNT CONCACAF Gold Cup training camp roster call-ups, Brian White and the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Diego Luna's Real Salt Lake in a five-goal thriller.

Let's get into it.

Who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest 2025 MLS Power Rankings.

Note: Previous rankings were released on May 19.

  • San Diego FC v LA GalaxyGetty Images Sport

    30Los Angeles Galaxy

    Prior Ranking: 30

Results: Lost 2-1 to San Diego FC

Ramifications: How many times does it need to be drilled into the heads of the LA Galaxy players that individual mistakes cost the entire team? All season long, it's been the case, and Saturday was no different. With a point on the cards in the dying minutes of the game, for some reason, Carlos Garces could not handle a defensive clearance and instead put the ball on a platter for SDFC to counter, score, and take all three points.

Greg Vanney must be absolutely furious - the Galaxy had a real opportunity here.

  • 29St. Louis CITY SC

    Prior Ranking: 27

    Result: Lost to Colorado 1-0

Ramifications: CITY look lifeless on the pitch at the moment, with little idea of what to do or how to create - even in their own half. They registered three decent chances against Colorado, but lacked a clinical touch all evening long.

Right now, they're a club with a lot of pieces that don't have spots in the puzzle. Winless in 11 - it's becoming fair to start holding them in conversation with the Galaxy for how poor they are.

  • 28CF Montreal

    Prior Ranking: 29

    Results: Drew LAFC 2-2

Ramifications: It's a good point, all in all. For a club that is immensely struggling like MTL, getting a result at home against a talented side like LAFC is impressive. Sure, they've had some abysmal showings earlier in the season, but results against all three of the Crew, NYCFC and now LAFC over the past month show that there's still fight in the team.

  • 27D.C. United

    Prior Ranking: 25

    Result: Lost to RBNY 2-0

Ramifications: D.C. has not scored in four-straight, and things are really just looking bleak. Christian Benteke suffered an injury last week and won't feature for a few weeks, which is only going to add to their growing woes.

Manager Troy Lesesne has his hands full.

  • 26Toronto FC

    Prior Ranking: 26

Result: Lost to Nashville SC 2-1

Ramifications: It was too little too late for Toronto against Nashville. They found the back of the net in stoppage-time through Jonathan Osorio, but they struggled all evening long to create - with both Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi going quiet.

TFC needs better playmaking if they are going to climb out of 14th place in the Eastern Conference.

  • Atlanta United v FC CincinnatiGetty Images Sport

    25Atlanta United

    Prior Ranking: 28

    Result: Defeated FC Cincinnati 4-2

Ramifications: There it is. This was the performance that Atlanta fans were waiting for. Curiously, it came without relatively monumental impact from both Miguel Almiron and Emmanuel Latte Lath. Four different goal scorers, none of whom were their star-studded DPs, lifted them to such an important win at home at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta's eight-match stretch without a win was finally snapped, and the floodgates really opened up against a really talented FCC side.

Fantastic performance - now the focus will be on if this is a result Atlanta can build on.

  • 24Sporting Kansas City

    Prior Ranking: 24

    Result: Drew New England 3-3

Ramifications: Sporting had one of their best attacking performances of the season against the Revolution, but they left a lot to be desired defensively. An eight-minute burst of momentum saw them score all three goals in less than 10 minutes, and it was brilliant to see both Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia end up on the scoresheet, but there just wasn't enough there throughout the game.

Their third-straight draw, but they're now winless in their last four - and it's starting to feel like they're hitting a plateau.

  • 23FC Dallas

    Prior Ranking: 22

    Result: Lost to Seattle 1-0

Ramifications: A penalty kick was all that separated the two sides in a rather uneventful affair. FCD nearly stole a point on the road, which they likely would have been thrilled with, but it just didn't go their way. Seattle had an xG of 3.1, and Maarten Paes made four spectacular saves to deny them from open play, but a late Albert Rusnak penalty stole the show.

FCD had their opportunities; they had five shots on net, but nothing gave way.

Just one win in their last eight.

  • 22Real Salt Lake

    Prior Ranking: 21

    Result: Lost to Vancouver 3-2

Ramifications: RSL are an infuriating team to watch. Within the opening 10 minutes of the match, they led the conference-leading Whitecaps 2-0, but then just decided to bunker down and be content with their early lead.

Zavier Gozo, 18, bagged his first professional goal inside two minutes before Diego Luna found the back of the net once again, but nothing came after. U.S. striker Brian White found a brace before the halftime whistle, and in the 90th minute, Pedro Vite scored a winner for Vancouver - because they kept pressing.

RSL have been so close all year - but they keep falling short by minuscule margins. This has to be frustrating for manager Pablo Mastroeni.

  • 21Chicago Fire

    Prior Ranking: 18

    Result: Lost to NYCFC 3-1

Ramifications: Gregg Berhalter has to be furious for multiple reasons. Chicago started the game brilliantly, going up 1-0 inside 20 minutes, but then Brian Gutierrez saw straight red for a blatant elbow to the face of an opposition player. It's just inexcusable from the U.S. international, especially following a two-goal performance from him last weekend.

Substitute Dje D'Avilla then saw red late in the match himself after picking up two yellow cards - but it didn't come without controversy. The defender appeared to get the ball in the play in question, but upon a lengthy VAR review, the call on the field was a penalty and yellow, thus prompting his removal from the match. Watch the play below to determine if the call was fair or not. Just a disastrous showing from the Fire, plagued by individual error.

  • Houston Dynamo 2025Imagn

    20Houston Dynamo

    Prior Ranking: 20

    Result: Drew San Jose 3-3

Ramifications: One of the games of the weekend, Houston left it late, but earned a deserved point on the road against Bruce Arena's men. A 91st-minute equalizer from Griffin Dorsey confirmed the result, with the defender drilling home from outside the box off a Jack McGlynn assist.

Houston outperformed their xG of 1.9 by a wide margin, pulling off an impressive road result to make it three-straight unbeaten against Western Conference opponents.

  • 19San Jose Earthquakes

    Prior Ranking: 16

    Result: Drew Houston Dynamo 3-3

Ramifications: What a game. Preston Judd was the unexpected hero, as the substitute scored a late brace to help them to a point. Ian Harkes bagged two assists as well, but it was Judd who sparked the comeback after going down 2-0.

Arena won't be thrilled with how things ended, conceding an equalizer in stoppage time, but with how the match started? A point seems fair.

  • 18Colorado Rapids

    Prior Ranking: 23

    Result: Defeated CITY 1-0

Ramifications: A win is a win, and manager Chris Armas will take it. The match wasn't spectacular by any means, but that's two-straight 1-0 victories following a period of them going winless in five.

The Rapids don't look like a team that will compete with the best in the league this year, but they'll be in the fight for a low seed in the postseason if they keep this up.

  • 17Charlotte FC

    Prior Ranking: 19

    Result: Defeated Columbus 3-2

Ramifications: What a performance from Charlotte! A Patrick Agyemang brace helped them snap a five-match losing streak in regular season play, while Wilfried Zaha bagged two assists and Pep Biel ended up with two goal contributions himself, including the game-winner. All three of their star attackers linked up to defeat one of the best teams in the league, showing the rest of MLS what CLT can do on their best day.

All that's needed now is consistency.

  • 16Austin FC

    Prior Ranking: 15

    Result: Drew MNUFC 1-1

Ramifications: Outplayed for the majority of the game, Austin should be thrilled with a point. Outshot 17-8, Zan Kolmanic scored a lovely goal, and their defense followed suit by doing their job. After falling 3-0 to MN just under a month ago at home, this is a good point.

  • Emil Forsberg New York Red Bulls 2025Imagn

    15New York Red Bulls

    Prior Ranking: 14

    Result: Defeated D.C. United 2-0

Ramifications: Good performance. Emil Forsberg is now up to five goals and five assists this season - already reaching his assist total from 2024. The result snapped a two-game losing streak, and against a struggling D.C. side, gave RBNY a boost of confidence they needed.

  • 14New England Revolution

    Prior Ranking: 12

    Result: Drew Sporting KC 3-3

Ramifications: Offensively, manager Caleb Porter will be thrilled with how his attack performed. They were consistent, resilient, and did exactly what was asked of them. Defensively, he'll be baffled. They conceded all three goals that Sporting scored within a 10-minute span, allowing them back into the game after going up 2-0.

Regardless, it's another point for the Revs, who are now seven-unbeaten in MLS play.

  • 13Inter Miami

    Prior Ranking: 11

    Result: Drew Philadelphia 3-3

Ramifications: Messi’s magic is always a joy to watch—and his stunning 87th-minute equalizer was no exception—but make no mistake: this was a dreadful performance from Miami. Snatching a point felt wildly undeserved, yet they’ll take it and move on.

Defensively, the Herons are in shambles. They conceded 18 shots to a Philadelphia side that had just 38 percent possession, and all three Union goals stemmed from glaring individual errors.

Manager Javier Mascherano has to be feeling the heat. This simply isn’t a sustainable model for a club with Miami’s ambitions.

  • 12Portland Timbers

    Prior Ranking: 8

    Result: Lost to Orlando 1-0

Ramifications: Tough result against a really good team. In the end, Portland just couldn't create anything. They managed just two shots on goal to create an xG of .3, despite out-possessing and out-passing Orlando all night long.

Losing to Orlando isn't a bad result - they're fantastic. However, this was a good learning moment for manager Phil Neville - the Timbers need to learn how to create opportunities against a low block if they're to make any sort of playoff run this season.

  • 11Los Angeles FC

    Prior Ranking: 7

    Result: Drew CF MTL 2-2

Ramifications: Olivier Giroud scored his second goal of the season and his first from open play - a great development for both him and the club, but this was a poor road showing from LAFC. Against a struggling CF MTL side, they conceded a disastrous opening goal and then handed them a penalty kick inside 22 minutes. They bounced back to earn a point, but overall, it was not a great showing by all accounts.

Manager Steve Cherundolo will feel like this was two points lost rather than one gained.

  • Alonso Martinez NYCFC 2025Imagn

    10New York City FC

    Prior Ranking: 17

    Result: Defeated Chicago 3-1

Ramifications: NYCFC saw a huge opportunity and they took it, scoring three unanswered after conceding early while seeing Chicago reduced to 10 men in the first half following a Gutierrez red. With results in five of their last six now, the Pigeons are cruising.

  • 9Seattle Sounders

    Prior Ranking: 10

    Result: Defeated FC Dallas 1-0

Ramifications: This is a game where, simply put, Seattle was unlucky; it registered an xG of 3.1, but its lone goal and the winner came from the penalty spot. Despite not converting more chances, the Sounders will take it and move on.

  • 8Minnesota United

    Prior Ranking: 6

    Result: Drew Austin 1-1

Ramifications: Minnesota manager Eric Ramsay won't be satisfied with this one after the Loons scored three and kept a clean sheet against Austin in early May. They relatively dominated the match all throughout the contest, but struggled to generate genuine opportunities in the final third.

With the result, SDFC have leapfrogged them in the Western Conference standings, pushing them down to third in the table.

  • 7Nashville SC

    Prior Ranking: 13

    Result: Defeated Toronto FC 2-1

Ramifications: Hany Mukhtar looks like a player reborn in 2025 following an off-season last campaign, with the German forward up to six goals and five assists this season. He had a fantastic assist on their opening goal and was Nashville's best player all night as they earned a brilliant road result in Canada.

Nashville are now six unbeaten, and are looking like a threatening side in the Eastern Conference.

  • 6San Diego FC

    Prior Ranking: 10

    Result: Defeated LA Galaxy 2-1

Ramifications: What a performance this was from Chucky Lozano. The Mexico international played a brilliant two-way game all night long, putting in tackles defensively, and then late in the match, countered brilliantly to score the winner.

It was a stage for their star to shine, and he sure did. That's five-straight unbeaten for SDFC, with just three total goals conceded during that span - they're playing brilliantly.

  • Wilfried Nancy Columbus CrewUSA Today Images

    5Columbus Crew

    Prior Ranking: 4

Result: Lost to Charlotte FC 3-2

Ramifications: It wasn't the Crew's day. Charlotte wanted the result more than them, simply put. Outshot 17 to 12, the Crew just couldn't generate as many opportunities as their opposition on the road.

Manager Wilfried Nancy needs to figure out how to unlock Daniel Gazdag if he wants to win matches like these. Since acquiring the Hungary international for a reported $4 million fee, the forward has gone seven matches in MLS play without a goal contribution for the Crew. A big few weeks lie ahead.

  • 4FC Cincinnati

    Prior Ranking: 3

Result: Lost to Atlanta United 4-2

Ramifications: Cincy lost defender Nick Hagglund just 14 minutes into the game, and it really hurt their defensive structure. Atlanta, however, was bound for a breakout game - it was just unfortunate for FCC that it came against them this time around.

Not a lot to read into here, it just wasn't Cincy's day. Pat Noonan will just hope Hagglund isn't missing for a long period of time.

  • 3Orlando City

    Prior Ranking: 5

    Result: Defeated Portland 1-0

Ramifications: Great run, finish and strike from U.S. international Duncan McGuire to get the winner here. The Lions may have sat back and defended more than they intended, but they kept a cheeky Timbers side quiet, and extended their unbeaten streak to 12 matches - tying their club record.

Orlando is quietly playing some of the best soccer in all of MLS right now.

  • 2Philadelphia Union

    Prior Ranking: 1

    Result: Drew Inter Miami 3-3

Ramifications: A really, really frustrating point for Philly. They were in complete control until the final minutes of the game, where they fell victim to a brilliant free kick from Messi, and a delightful goal he set up in the dying moments of the match.

A lot of positives to take away, though. Their set piece play was fantastic, and Tai Baribo just continues to score goal after goal for them. In the grand scheme of things, it's a good point, and a result where they learned a lot about themselves as a club.

  • Brian White Vancouver Whitecaps 2025Imagn

    1Vancouver Whitecaps

    Prior Ranking: 2

    Result: Defeated RSL 3-2

Ramifications: Well, that was eventful. A fascinating road win, Vancouver came from 2-0 down to secure what is just a brilliant result. U.S. international Brian White bagged a first half brace, but where the real magic came from was the boot of Pedro Vite. A 90th-minute winner, he curled home a truly splendid strike - as the Whitecaps just refused to give up all night long.

Resilient and competitive, it was a fantastic performance, and a reminder to the rest of MLS that they're a team who plays until the final whistle.
