'Determined to fight back' - Mika Godts reflects on PSG debut after second-half revival at Rennes

PSG launched their Ligue 1 title defence by clawing back a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Rennes at Roazhon Park. The hosts took firm control in the first half courtesy of Sebastian Szymanski's long-range strike and a close-range finish from Esteban Lepaul. The half-time introductions of Godts and Torres transformed the contest, with the Spanish forward netting a quickfire brace to rescue a point.

Speaking to the club's official media channels after the final whistle, the young Belgian winger revealed the squad's half-time resolve and praised the crucial backing from the travelling fans. Reflecting on the interval team talk and the atmosphere in the stands, Godts said: "We were 2-0 down. In the second half, we came out determined to fight back, and we did just that. I was pleased to make my debut, but we were behind so I tried to focus on my own game. The fans are important; they help us a lot. We saw that when we scored to make it 2-1, they helped us go on to score the second."

Enrique acted decisively at the interval after watching his starting side struggle to contain the hosts' counter-attacking threat during a difficult opening 45 minutes.

Reflecting on the defensive challenges and the crucial impact made by his substitutes, the Spanish manager explained: "Today was more difficult than usual. In the first half, there were situations we weren't able to control.

"Rennes launched some top-class counter-attacks, and they managed to score two goals with great precision. It was very complicated, very difficult. We tried to make some changes, and I'm particularly pleased with the five players who came on during the match. They all did a very good job."

He added: "The supporters are incredible; whatever our performance, they're always there to support the team. We'd like to thank them and we hope to improve. That's our job, and I hope we can play much better."

The hard-fought draw gives Enrique plenty to ponder following PSG's Trophee des Champions defeat to Lens the previous weekend. The manager must quickly resolve defensive vulnerabilities while accelerating the tactical integration of his new attacking options. The French champions will seek their first competitive victory of the campaign when they travel to face Lille on Friday, August 28.
