Roma were impressive, adventurous and dominant in the first half. By the end, they looked baffling and frightened, with another comeback against them complicating their qualification plans. At Old Trafford, Roma lost 3-2 to a Manchester United side who had not won in 10 matches, despite ending a spectacular first half two goals ahead thanks to Soulé and Malen's penalty. Fatigue took its toll after the break as United threw everything forward, and individual errors cost Roma.
For the first 45 minutes, only Roma's fans could be heard. Their team looked every bit the side seen in the league. Soulé finished after an inspired pass from Mora, then Malen converted the penalty awarded for Heaven's handball from a Soulé shot. Roma had at least three more chances to score. United were slow and nervous, offering little beyond a Mainoo shot that Vasquez dealt with comfortably. The third-choice goalkeeper had become the starter because of injuries to Svilar and Gollini, the latter sidelined by a back problem.
United attacked relentlessly after the break, while Roma, with Pisilli on in place of Mora, never managed to break forward. Cunha cleverly won the penalty that brought United back into the match (Vasquez saved Bruno Fernandes's first attempt from the spot, but Cristante entered the penalty area before the kick and the Portuguese player made no mistake with his second attempt, sending the Colombian the wrong way). A minute later, Mbeumo hit both posts, giving Roma a scare. United kept Roma pinned back and scored twice in three minutes, both goals coming from Cunha: Balerdi missed the ball to gift the Brazilian the chance to make it 2-2, then the former Atletico Madrid player beat Vasquez at his near post. Cunha was then sent off for two bookings, the first for taking off his shirt after his goal and the second for a bad challenge on Balerdi. Roma's final onslaught came to nothing.
