  • Big money spent over the summer
  • Yet to see a return on that investment
  • Senior stars recovering from injury
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils spent big again over the summer – bringing in the likes of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund – but they have continued to struggle for consistency in 2023-24. Fans would like to see supposed weaknesses in an expensively-assembled squad addressed, but Ten Hag has hinted at keeping faith with those already at his disposal as he prepares to welcome a number of senior stars back from injury.

    WHAT TEN HAG SAID

United boss Ten Hag has said when quizzed on potential recruitment plans: “The current squad, I am happy. As we get our players back, we have a good squad. A lot of the way it went in the first season, the reasons behind that, were because many players were not available. I am sure when all players are on board it looks different, Casemiro, [Lisandro] Martinez, Mount, we will be much stronger after the window.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have gone three games without a win in all competitions, slipping out of Europe in the process, but did hold Liverpool to a goalless draw last time out and Ten Hag is feeling positive heading into the festive period. The Dutchman added: “First of all, we had such a busy programme. The lads had some days off ahead of another busy week. They needed the rest, to get away from football, mentally. We can go in the week, a great opportunity for us. Liverpool result will give the team confidence. Now we have to get forward.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

The Red Devils did not have a midweek game, meaning that they should be fully refreshed for a trip to West Ham on Saturday. They then have meetings with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to take them through to the end of the calendar year.
