  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Evans made a shock return to his boyhood club United after eight years in the summer of 2023, following the expiry of his Leicester City contract. He spent the next two seasons at Old Trafford before deciding to hang up his boots. He appeared for the Red Devils one last time against Hong Kong on Friday as the club won 3-1 in their second match of the post-season tour of Asia.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In his 19-year-long professional career, Evans won every major trophy. He also played for Royal Antwerp, Sunderland and West Brom, other than United and Leicester and made 537 competitive appearances. He also represented Northern Ireland in 107 international games. In the 2024-25 campaign, the defender played in 13 matches across all competitions, where he scored one goal.

  • WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim paid tribute to the veteran defender as he told reporters: "It's really nice and the level he has in training, you can see the standards in his prime, and you understand why they won so many titles. With his age, with a lot of problems physically, when he was fit to train, the level was really high. You can understand he was a very good player."
