Inter, who is Pedro Henrique: from Champions League opponent to new target on the flank

Down to 10 men against 11, Inter beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, lifting their spirits and reviving their European campaign. The match also gave Inter's transfer staff a chance to watch a previously recommended talent live and up close, one who could become a future target.

Brazilian full-back Pedro Henrique, born in 2002, impressed them enough to convince them a potential investment would be worthwhile. His valuation is already soaring.

  • The match against Inter

Pedro Henrique started against Inter and played all 93 minutes. He did not stand out going forward, particularly on a flank where he faced a below-par Spence and then the Diouf-Luis Henrique pairing. Instead, his explosive defensive recovery runs, resilience in one-on-ones and almost inexhaustible, moped-like running capacity impressed Inter's scouts and Marotta himself.

  • Running and quality

A natural left-footer, he combines stamina with sharp acceleration over short distances. He plays at full-back in a back four but can also operate on the right on his weaker foot. Those physical qualities would also help him adapt easily to a wing-back role covering the entire flank in a five-man midfield.

On the ball, he has quality too. This season he has already scored with a powerful strike from outside the box and provided an assist. His numbers have risen sharply in recent years, during which he has recorded 12 assists and three goals.

  • The controversial move to Athletico Paranaense

Pedro Henrique Azevedo Pereira was born on 11 July 2002 in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia. He came through Vitoria's youth ranks as an attacking wide player, then gradually moved into a deeper role. He made his first-team appearances in 2020, and his performances prompted Athletico Paranaense to invest in him in 2021.

A dispute between the two clubs followed. Vitoria accused the Furaçao of failing to keep their promise to loan him back after signing him, while Athletico Paranaense maintained that they had signed him on a free transfer to avoid paying a transfer fee. Pedrinho, a nickname used because his father was called Pedro, was even unable to play for a short period. The case went to the CBF's National Disputes Chamber, which ordered a payment of 8.5 million reais to settle the deal.

  • And the betting scandal

In 2023, however, he became embroiled in the betting scandal dubbed Penalidade Maxima, and was formally investigated and accused of accepting 80,000 Brazilian reais to receive a yellow card against Cuiabà. He did receive one.

Athletico Paranaense released him and team-mate Bryan Garcia that year, before prosecutors had even formally brought the accusation (source: Globo Esporte). Shortly afterwards, he accepted Shakhtar Donetsk's approach, left Brazil and restarted his career in Europe.

  • Worth 25 million

Pedro Henrique is now a mainstay for Arda Turan's Shakhtar Donetsk, and his performances have caught the eye in Milan and elsewhere in Europe. The Ukrainian club, led by sporting director Darijo Srna (READ OUR INTERVIEW HERE), sell players but demand high prices for their prized assets. With Pedro Henrique under contract until 30 June 2030, they have set his transfer fee at no less than €25 million.
