    WHAT HAPPENED?

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has ruled out Lionel Messi for the team’s Florida Derby match against Orlando City SC, saying he doesn’t want to risk the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Leo will not be available tomorrow. He’s fine, but obviously it would be crazy to risk taking him to Orlando with everything we have ahead of us,” he said.

The manager expressed optimism for a quick return.

“We’re optimistic he’ll be back with us soon.”

Messi was forced off just seven minutes into last Saturday’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa after colliding with two players from the Mexican side, which left him unable to continue.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi also missed the group stage finale against Pumas in the Leagues Cup and will now sit out another crucial match against a direct rival in the Eastern Conference, with Mascherano choosing to prioritize his star’s long-term fitness over short-term results.

    WHAT JAVIER MASCHERANO SAID

Despite Messi's absence, Miami have had continued success due to the arrival of fellow Argentina international Rodrigo De Paul. Mascherano pointed to his impact as a difference maker.

“It’s important that he can contribute with goals. Both he, Tadeo, and Telasco have been putting up very good numbers," he said.

Regarding their upcoming Leagues Cup quarterfinal clash with Tigres, the Argentine coach noted, “Tigres is a great team. They showed it last night against Puebla [a 7–0 win]. They’re a team that always competes for big things.”
