Revealed: How Liverpool agreed Mohamed Salah contract in 2022 as Harvard University study reveals Reds were ‘very far away’ with initial offer to Egyptian superstar

The iconic American university were able to get inside information regarding the discussions which took place prior to Egyptian superstar Salah committing to fresh terms at Anfield. That paperwork was signed in July 2022, with an extended agreement keeping the talismanic forward on Merseyside for three more years.

There was, however, the threat of a compromise proving impossible to reach at one stage – as Liverpool’s opening offer fell a long way short of Salah’s expectations – but Harvard Business School has revealed how discussions between the 31-year-old and his agent Ramy Abbas Issa eventually resulted in a deal being done.

It has been revealed that Salah’s representative told him during a phone call in June 2022: “I am starting to fear that we may not be able to come to an agreement on a new contract, Mohamed - their latest offer is still very far from what we want.”

Salah said of his agent “we are partners, I know he will always do what is best for me”, before adding on his desire to remain with Premier League heavyweights: “I want to stay with Liverpool. But the club needs to show they want me as well.”

Salah got what he was looking for and has been in impressive form ever since – netting 30 goals last season before recording three goals and four assists through six games at the start of the 2023-24 campaign. He was heavily linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia over the summer, with a £215 million ($263m) bid said to have been lodged at one stage, and it remains to be seen whether he will see out the contract that Liverpool worked so hard to put in place.
