  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United fell behind in the second leg of their last-16 tie at Old Trafford, but two Fernandes penalties put the hosts in the lead before he completed his hat-trick to put them in a comfortable spot. Then, Diogo Dalot provided the icing on the cake when he scored in stoppage time to make it 5-2 on aggregate. United will go on to face Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, keeping the competition as a beacon of hope in an otherwise horrific season for the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ruben Amorim's team had won just one of their previous six matches heading into Thursday's game and club captain Fernandes has challenged his co-stars to bring more positive results heading into the last two months of the season.

  • WHAT FERNANDES SAID

"This club is all about winning. We need to win games. We have a long way to go, but we are confident if we focus on every game ahead and have the right mentality we can win games," he told TNT Sports. "With the result and performance when you start to get a bit more confident, confidence is a big thing in football. We are doing very good progress, but the progress will be seen if we get results. At this club it is all about results."
