Euro 2024 Golden Boot contenders GFXGOAL

Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and the top 15 Euro 2024 Golden Boot contenders - ranked

The Golden Boot has a storied history at the European Championship, with some of the game's most illustrious players securing the award down the years.

In 1972, legendary German poacher Gerd Muller saw his name etched on the trophy, while Michel Platini strengthened his own playing legacy with a remarkable nine-goal haul in the 1984 edition in France. More recently, record Premier League goal-getter Alan Shearer has won the Golden Boot, while David Villa, Fernando Torres and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo also have the gong in their sizable trophy cabinets.

But sometimes the winner of the top-scorer award can come out of leftfield. In 2004, Milan Baros could not buy a goal heading into the tournament in Portugal. But by the time all was said and done, nobody had bettered his haul. "If somebody told me beforehand I would score five goals in this tournament I wouldn't have believed them," Baros himself admitted.

But where is the Euro 2024 Golden Boot heading this summer? Will an established name prove the bookies right and run away with it, or might we see a surprise package capture the world's attention in Germany? GOAL has taken a look at some of the runners and riders to be top scorer at the tournament.

  • Patrik Schick Czech 2023-24Getty Images

    15Patrick Schick (Czech Republic)

Schick was spectacular at Euro 2020, only losing out on the Golden Boot to Cristiano Ronaldo as the timeless Portuguese forward registered more assists. The Czech star will be hopeful of another strong showing this time out, with his nation set for eminently winnable group-stage clashes against Turkey and Georgia.

Net a few goals in those games and Schick will only be a strong knockout-stage away from putting himself in serious contention for the Golden Boot once more. His club form for Bayer Leverkusen has been solid this season too, while he's averaging around a goal every two caps for his country.

  • Aleksandar Mitrovic Serbia 2023-24Getty Images

    14Aleksandar Mitrovic (Serbia)

There's no doubting Mitrovic's ability to find the back of the net. He's shown that at club level this season, netting 28 times in as many Saudi Pro League games as Al-Hilal went the entire campaign without losing a domestic match.

His record for Serbia is just as impressive, too. He may be scoreless in his last four caps, but he still boasts 57 strikes in 89 games - enough to make him his country's all-time leading scorer by a comfortable margin. If Serbia can surprise the odds and make it through a group containing Denmark, Slovenia and England, expect Mitrovic to be in with a good chance of winning the Golden Boot.

  • Leroy Sane Germany 2023-24Getty Images

    13Leroy Sane (Germany)

Sane heads into this home Euros with a point to prove. In his last outing for the national team, which came all the way back in November 2023, he was sent off and subsequently banned for three games after pushing Austria's Philipp Mwene in the face.

Sane's Bayern Munich performances have been criticised at times this season too, but manager Julian Nagelsmann and veteran Toni Kroos have both defended him publicly. The former Manchester City man is electric on his day, but has always been a bit streaky. If he can hit form in time for the Euros, he'll be difficult to stop.

  • Antoine Griezmann France 2023Getty Images

    12Antoine Griezmann (France)

Griezmann has a strong pedigree in the European Championship, comfortably finishing as top scorer in the 2016 iteration with six goals. But after losing in that final to Portugal, and failing to make an impact five years later, the Atletico Madrid icon will be especially motivated to perform in Germany.

He looks in good nick too, having scored 24 times for his club this season, though his recent goal record at international level is far from illustrious. He's much more of a facilitator for France than he is for Atleti, but that does not mean he won't get a few goals of his own at the tournament.

  • Alvaro Morata Spain 2023-24Getty Images

    11Alvaro Morata (Spain)

Morata's finishing has been the butt of many a joke through the years, particularly in international tournaments. However, despite the ribbing, his record speaks for itself, with the centre-forward averaging a strike every two games for La Roja.

He's coming into this tournament on the back of his best-ever goal-scoring season for Atletico Madrid too. It's all set up perfectly for Morata to definitively silence his doubters, provided Spain have a deep run in Germany.

  • Romelu Lukaku Belgium 2023-24Getty Images

    10Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)

Another ex-Chelsea striker whose prowess in front of goal has been doubted throughout his career, Lukaku will need to bring his shooting boots if Belgium are to cause problems this summer. His country's leading scorer, he finished the 2023-24 club campaign with 21 goals to his name for Roma and always seems to raise his level when pulling on his national team shirt.

Indeed, he has 15 goals in his last 10 caps, with those figures boosted considerably by a hat-trick against Sweden in March 2023 and a four-goal haul in a thrashing of a Azerbaijan more recently.

  • Giroud France 2023Getty Images

    9Olivier Giroud (France)

Giroud may be 37, but he's still set to lead the line for France this summer. The veteran is often praised for his ability to bring those around him into the game, but he also possesses a fearsome goal record himself, netting 57 times for Les Bleus to date.

And with France looking well placed to make the final, Giroud has an excellent chance to rubber stamp his footballing legacy in what looks set to be his last international tournament.

  • Kai Havertz Germany 2023-24Getty Images

    8Kai Havertz (Germany)

Havertz experienced a topsy-turvy season after joining Arsenal last summer. However, after making an inauspicious start, he ended the campaign as a mainstay for the Gunners, leading the line as Mikel Arteta's side missed out on the Premier League title on the final day to Manchester City.

It's been a similar story at international level. Back in November, he was intriguingly selected at left wing-back for friendlies against Turkey and Austria, with Julian Nageslmann's side losing both games. In response, Havertz returned to playing up front for victories over France and the Netherlands, and even scored against Les Bleus.

  • Niclas Fullkrug 2023-24Getty Images

    7Niclas Fullkrug (Germany)

Havertz is not 100 percent guaranteed to start for Germany, though. Borussia Dortmund's Niclas Fullkrug is also in the running, with the physical front man enjoying a remarkable rise in recent years. Since breaking into the national set up in 2022 following a fairly middling club career, he hasn't stopped hitting the back of the net.

Fullkrug has failed to score in just five of his 15 appearances in a Germany shirt and specialises in making an impact off the bench. Even if Havertz does start over him this summer, do not rule out the bruising centre-forward in the Golden Boot race.

  • Jude Bellingham England 2024Getty

    6Jude Bellingham (England)

Bellingham just treated us to one of the best debut Real Madrid seasons of all time. Now, the former Birmingham City man has a European crown in his sights.

The midfielder's second half of the season wasn't quite as legendary as his bright beginning in the Spanish capital, but he still finished the campaign with an incredible 23 goals from attacking midfield and England boss Southgate looks poised to build his team around the prodigious talent this summer. Provided he's given enough attacking freedom, Bellingham's certain to add to his currently underwhelming tally of three international goals.

  • Bukayo Saka England 2023Getty Images

    5Bukayo Saka (England)

Despite the competition for places in the England squad, Saka seems like a nailed-on starter for Gareth Southgate this summer. The Arsenal winger comes into the tournament having netted 20 goals for his club and will be aiming to add to his 11 strikes at international level, having not scored since grabbing a hat-trick against North Macedonia back in June 2023.

The Three Lions look destined to progress deep into the tournament, which will give Saka plenty of opportunities to score. But at the moment, several of his team-mates look more likely to clinch the Golden Boot.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal 2024`Getty Images

    4Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Although Ronaldo is no longer doing it in a top-five European league, he's still proved his goal-scoring touch remains lethal this season. Forty-four strikes in 45 club games for Al-Nassr is testament to that, and with Portugal coach Roberto Martinez throwing his support behind the legendary striker, he could become the first-ever player to retain the European Championship Golden Boot.

Martinez's side have very few weaknesses, and even if Ronaldo does not play every minute in Germany, he's still an effective finisher provided he gets regular service.

  • Phil Foden England 2023-24Getty Images

    3Phil Foden (England)

Placing Foden above some of the other names on this list may seem bold, but it's simply a reflection of how well the Manchester City midfielder ended the 2023-24 campaign. Foden helped himself to eight goals in his final five Premier League games to essentially hand Pep Guardiola his fourth-successive title, meaning he's in the form of his life going into the Euros.

There's been a bit of debate over where best to deploy the 24-year-old, but regardless of whether he begins games on the left or through the centre, he'll be constantly looking to find the back of the net.

  • Kylian Mbappe France 2024Getty Images

    2Kylian Mbappe (France)

Whenever Mbappe steps onto the field, the world sits up and takes notice. But following his blockbuster move to Real Madrid, the Frenchman is bracing himself for an even greater level of scrutiny. Mbappe will be piling plenty of pressure on himself, too.

Even with the forward scoring 44 goals, Paris Saint-Germain endured Champions League heartache once again. Mbappe even found himself on the bench at times, as he and head coach Luis Enrique traded barbs throughout the campaign. His time spent out of the starting XI might mean he's especially rested for the tournament, though, which is bad news for Europe's defences.

  • Harry Kane England 2024Getty Images

    1Harry Kane (England)

Much like Mbappe, Kane will be placing high expectations on himself for Euro 2024. When he joined Bayern Munich last summer, it was widely assumed that his long wait for a major trophy would finally come to an end.

Incredibly, though, Die Roten came up empty-handed, falling short to the invincible Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, exiting the DFB-Pokal early and then losing in the Champions League semi-finals. All of this transpired despite Kane scoring his way to the European Golden Shoe.

The England captain will be absolutely desperate to end an incredible, personal campaign with some silverware in his adopted home, then.
