  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Lukaku spent the season on loan at Roma and is scheduled to return to Stamford Bridge this summer. However, the Blues hope to offload him during the upcoming transfer window and would demand any suitors match the £38 million ($48m) release clause in his contract, says Fabrizio Romano.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The Belgium international could end up staying in Italy for the next few years, as Napoli have been linked with a move for him. The Serie A side are expected to hire Antonio Conte as their new coach and the ex-Chelsea boss is a known admirer of Lukaku as the pair won the Italian league title together at Inter. It was reported that the London team could use him in a possible swap deal for striker Victor Osimhen.

    Lukaku enjoyed a decent season on loan at Roma, scoring 21 goals in all competitions as they reached the Europa League semi-finals and finished sixth in Serie A. His contract at Chelsea runs for another two years, but he is not expected to feature for the Blues again.

    Lukaku will hope to attract further interest this summer by putting some impressive performances for Belgium at Euro 2024. The Rode Duivels have been drawn in Group E alongside Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia.
