  • WHAT HAPPENED?

During the Carabao Cup third-round draw last month, Barrow were drawn to play an away match against Premier League heavyweights Chelsea. According to The Telegraph, Barrow players have been handed a greater financial incentive to lose the third-round tie than to pull off an upset victory, which comes just before the two clubs' match on September 24.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to the report, the Barrow squad may receive incentives based on the result of the match; if they win, they will receive a substantially lower sum of £250 compared to the £1,000 payment they each stand to make if they lose. Concerns over the competition's integrity have been raised by this revelation since it appeared that the Barrow players had a large financial incentive to purposefully lose the match.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Barrow's bonus structure technically does not violate any regulations, but the English Football League (EFL) is reportedly irritated by it and expects the club to explain themselves because this is the first time a club has provided a higher prize for losing a match than for winning one.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARROW?

The bonus sheet has multiple inaccuracies that will be fixed, a Barrow source told The Telegraph, and the EFL has been informed of this. Barrow will take on Chelsea on September 25 at Stamford Bridge.
